Project Description
Sustainability
Sustainability
Sustainability
Climate change is possibly the greatest challenge and therefore the greatest opportunity that currently exists in the world today. It is the responsibility of every single one of us to understand how we can influence this agenda both personally and collectively through our business. Areas to be reviewed include:
- Legal compliance
- Policies and plans
- Climate change
- Pollution
- Energy efficiency
- Ecology
- Water saving measures

Although part of the sustainability/environmental agenda, the effective management of waste also makes good commercial sense, being aware of the high cost of waste removal and recycling. The occurrence of waste materials will probably occur on every single construction and building project currently in progress. The dilemma is how to reuse, recycle or dispose of it? Can waste be reduced due to more effective design? Who is responsible for its disposal? All these questions require resolution long before the project commences. The benefits of an effective waste strategy will include, but not limited to:
- Environmental benefits
- Cost savings
- Reduction in potential health and safety issues
- Innovative solutions
- Perceived sustainable business

Possibly the biggest challenge facing the construction industry currently, is the lack of skilled individuals to undertake all the key managerial and trade activities. Development programmes not only broaden the knowledge base within your company but an emphasis on training and personal development will result in a more stable and contented and driven workforce. Other benefits will include:
- Not having to replace employees who feel undervalued
- More effective and efficient personnel
- Increased client base due to being an organisation who invest in your people
- Become an employer of choice due to an enhanced reputation for training
- Increased production outputs
- Identifying grant funding opportunities

If the cost of training and the employment of new people into your business are prohibitive, what are the solutions in addressing this problem? The key element is to understand what grant funding may be available in the marketplace and more importantly how do we access this funding? It is a minefield trying to establish which grants are currently available and from whom in construction. A very good place to start is via the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), who will provide information on:
- Short-course grants
- Apprenticeship grants
- Qualification grants
- Skills and training phones
- CITB grant scheme
- How to claim for grants?
